As storm preparations were just about complete at the Humane Society of Sarasota County, executive director Anna Gonce added one more task to the list; meet the dog transport that was arriving with 15 dogs from Dixie County Animal Control.

"These are dogs that would have otherwise had to ride out the storm in outside kennels," said Gonce. "We had the capacity available to assist, thanks in part to recent adoptions during our Clear The Shelters event. They now have a safe place to ride out the storm."

The Clear The Shelters promotion has resulted in 166 cats and dogs being adopted from the shelter, with over 30 during the last weekend alone.

The Humane Society of Sarasota County (HSSC) remains committed to collaboration, regionally and nationally. The Dixie County shelter's need was brought to HSSC's attention by a representative of the Humane Society of the Unites States. Transportation was provided by Blooper Animal Rescue & Transport.

The dogs transported in will be available for adoption soon, pending medical and behavior evaluation. Staff will remain on-site at the shelter to care for the animals throughout the duration of the storm.
