As a private, nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization, the Humane Society of Sarasota County relies solely on donations from individuals, organizations, and corporations. HSSC receives no federal funding, nor are we funded by any national humane organization. Every donation serves a purpose and is used to help HSSC fulfill our mission to engage the hearts, hands, and minds of the community to help animals.
**Now more than ever, HSSC needs donations to sustain our lifesaving work. With so many programs and services canceled or postponed due to COVID-19, we are projecting a significant impact on our revenue. You can help by making a secure online donation. Every donation will help us continue to perform our lifesaving work for animals.**
Every donation is sincerely appreciated. Thank you for supporting the area’s premier no-kill shelter.
HSSC accepts cash, checks, money orders, and credit cards (VISA, MasterCard, American Express, and Discover). Checks and money orders must be payable to “Humane Society of Sarasota County.”
HSSC also accepts appreciated assets, qualified charitable distributions from IRAs, in-kind gifts, and planned gifts. Some gifts are subject to prior review. Please consult the HSSC Gift Acceptance Policy (PDF) for more information.
HSSC will provide acknowledgment to donors meeting IRS substantiation requirements for property received by the charity as a gift. Unless the donor has indicated that HSSC should not send mail, tax acknowledgment letters are mailed to all donors who have provided complete mailing information. Acknowledgment letters will be mailed 2-6 weeks after receipt of the donation. Due to the volume of year-end/holiday gifts, it may take longer to receive your acknowledgment for gifts made late in the year. Even though your letter may arrive after January 1, as long as your gift was made or postmarked on or before December 31, your acknowledgment will show the gift as having been made in the previous year.
If you have any questions about a gift you made to HSSC, please contact 941.955.4131 x115.
HSSC is committed to transparency and accountability. We are audited annually by an outside firm, and our latest Form 990 and Audited Financial Statements are available to the public.
HSSC has received the coveted 4-star rating from Charity Navigator, America’s premier independent charity evaluator, for four consecutive years. Receiving four out of a possible four stars indicates that HSSC adheres to good governance and other best practices that minimize the chance of unethical activities and consistently executes its mission in a fiscally responsible way. Of the more than 1,500 Sarasota-based nonprofit organizations, only seven were awarded Charity Navigator’s 4-star rating, and HSSC is the only 4-star animal welfare organization in Sarasota. Furthermore, HSSC has the highest overall score of all seven of those 4-star-rated charities: a perfect 100 out of a possible 100 points (as of November 2018). HSSC is one of only two perfect-scoring animal-welfare organizations in Florida. Nationwide, HSSC is one of just six perfect-scoring animal-welfare organizations. View HSSC’s Profile.
