Just look at that tongue! Lemuel is ready for playtime! Lemuel was transferred to HSSC from Lee County Domestic Animal Services, where he was originally found and brought in as a stray. Lucky for us, and you, he is here at HSSC waiting for his fur-ever home! Although he's 8 years old, he is still an energetic dude who loves to have fun and play - and he loves getting a doggy bath! He's the perfect sized Labrador Retriever at 34 pounds and would love a big backyard to play fetch and tug-of-war. As with most shelter dogs, Lemuel would benefit from obedience classes to help develop the ideal owner/dog relationship. He would prefer a home where he is the only animal and center of attention, as he doesn't love to play with other dogs. Keep in mind that Lemuel thinks cats are for chasing and he would prefer a home without them. Are his beautiful black coat and white chest and belly drawing you in yet? He's eager to go home, so don't miss out on meeting Lemuel today! Since Lemuel is one of our long-term dogs, we offer a special "Slumber Party" with him! The slumber party is an extended trial period where Lemuel stays in your home for 3-30 days. HSSC will provide all of his food, medications, and necessities during this time. Should you fall in love with Lemuel during this time, you simply return to HSSC to complete the adoption and live happily ever after. Should you decide that Lemuel is not right for you, you just bring him back to HSSC, and know that with feedback about his behavior, you have helped us look for the best home for him. Let us know if you are interested in this offer! Below, we give a little explanation as to why Lemuel needs a home which accommodates his special needs: Lemuel is a resource guarder. Resource guarding stems from jealousy and competition in which Lemuel feels inclined to protect items he deems valuable (especially toys) from humans/animals that he deems as potential threats. Lemuel just can't get enough of his toys! For this reason, we believe Lemuel would thrive best in a home where he is the only dog and without children under 12 years old. If you are still interested in Lemuel, our experienced staff will be happy to further inform and prepare you for Lemuel's resource guarding behavior.
