Finishing the Year Strong

Nonprofit organizations typically receive 30% of their annual giving in the month of December, with 12% in just the last three days of the year. HSSC is no exception. The support of generous people like you is so crucial to helping our organization fulfill our lifesaving mission. We have already found homes for more than 2,050 dogs and cats this year. That’s 1,900 animals who are resting comfortably in their furever homes this holiday season. But there is still work to do. There is always one more dog with a tragic backstory. One more litter of motherless kittens in need of round-the-clock care. One more senior pet who can’t understand why he’s been abandoned. This is the work we do at HSSC. We could not do it without you. We hope you will find it in your hearts to donate this season.

Giving Tuesday

We were overwhelmed by your generosity on Giving Tuesday (November 30, 2021). The gifts are still coming in from the Flanzer Trust, but we raised more than $60,000 that day alone. If you did not get a chance to participate on Giving Tuesday, the good news is that the Flanzer Trust is still matching gifts 1:1 up to $500 through December 31, 2021. Simply visit the Louis and Gloria Flanzer Philanthropic Trust and select "Humane Society of Sarasota County" from the list of recipients. You can make your gift via PayPal or credit/debit. More good news: $2.7B was donated to U.S. nonprofits and community organizations on Giving Tuesday.

Holiday Wishes

If shelter animals could speak or write, what would they say? In our holiday letter, we channeled the voice of Blue, a 3-year-old pitbull mix who had spent his entire life in a rusty cage before he arrived at HSSC. We imagined how he must feel, having gone from a lonely, uncomfortable life, to the relative luxury of HSSC—a place where the food is as plentiful as the walks and affection. If the shelter dogs and cats could speak, their stories might be too heartbreaking to hear. All we can do is continue to care for them and to help them understand they are safe and loved and that they have a home with us for as long as they need one.

One Last Time

One of the things that makes HSSC a premier no-kill shelter is how we go above and beyond for animals medically. Every animal that arrives at HSSC gets a thorough medical exam in our in-house shelter clinic. They receive vaccines and preventatives, and everyone who is not already spayed or neutered gets altered. That's our baseline of care. For those, like little pup Rocky, who need more than the basics, we are well-equipped to help them. Rocky was only a few months old when he arrived, and his tiny body was covered in horrible burns. He endured daily wound cleanings and got lots of TLC (and pain medication) as he healed. Now he's happy and healthy in his forever home. We could not be there for animals like Rocky without our supporters' help. Please consider making a year-end gift so we can continue to help the most desperate animals.

Ways to Give

You can support HSSC and reduce your 2021 tax bill at the same time with these charitable giving strategies. Mailed donations must be postmarked on or before December 31, 2021, and online credit/debit card gifts must be made on or before December 31, 2021, at 11:59pm to count in the 2021 tax year.

Cash Donations: The Consolidated Appropriations Act (CAA) expanded and extended the benefits of the CARES Act. Individual taxpayers taking the standard deduction can deduct up to $300 ($600 for married couples filing jointly) in charitable cash donations on their 2021 taxes. Individuals who itemize their deductions can deduct gifts up to 100% of their adjusted gross income (AGI). Businesses can deduct contributions up to 25% of their taxable income.

Stocks & Securities: By donating shares of appreciated stock (stock that has gone up in value) to a nonprofit, you save yourself from paying tax on the gains. You simply transfer the stock to the organization, which then sells it. The nonprofit does not have to pay tax on the gains and neither do you.

Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCD): If you have an IRA and are over 70-1/2, you can donate up to $100,000 per year to a charity directly from your IRA. By doing so, the distributions do not count as income, so you avoid taxes on them. At the same time, a QCD can satisfy the required minimum distribution (RMD) from your IRA. You must complete the transfer by December 31, 2021.
