Current Volunteers

First and foremost: Thank You! Your dedication and commitment are absolutely essential to keeping HSSC operating smoothly. In 2018 you gave nearly 30,000 hours of your time. That’s equivalent to nearly 14 full-time employees. Your hard work does not go unnoticed.

We appreciate your ability to adhere to our policies yet be flexible to meet the ever-changing needs of our dynamic shelter. Please contact our Volunteer Coordinator, Hayley Harvey, at 941.955.4131 x113, with questions, concerns, or feedback.

HSSC Dot Assignments – Effective May 2019

TEAL
Teal dogs can be placed in just about any home. During their behavior evaluation, they presented as very social and tolerant of all handling. They exhibited no signs of resource guarding with their food bowl or possessions, were not overly aroused in play, and were friendly or at least calmly tolerant of other dogs. Additionally, teal dogs have no concerning issues in their history, nor have they exhibited any concerning behavior while in our care. Teal dogs are the only dogs that can be placed in homes with children under age six.

GRAY
Gray dogs are shy, fearful, or under socialized. They need extra socialization and confidence building. These are dogs that we would not place with children under the age six because they may be a bit too nervous for the actions of young children. They may be fine in a home with children over six; however, depending on the dog, they may do better with older children (in which case age will be indicated on their kennel card—e.g., 10+).

BLACK
Black dogs are a bit on the exuberant side and will have greater exercise needs. Typically, these are dogs who have had little-to-no formal training and need some work in this department. Black dogs should not be in a home with children under six and may be too much for other young children. Black dogs are typically fine with other dogs, but they may be a bit too playful for some. Black dogs will need an adopter dedicated to providing them with lots of exercise and training.

PURPLE
Purple dogs are the behavior modification dogs. We have identified concerning behaviors in their history and have set up behavior modification programs for them. They need to go to a home with an experienced dog owner who is willing to continue the behavior modification program. Purple dogs cannot go to a home with children under the age of 14 years. In addition, they are not appropriate for currently childless couples that plan to start a family soon.

Any questions or concerns, please ask or report immediately to Corrie or Lisa: 941.955.4131 x124.
