SARASOTA COUNTY - The heroic act of an 11-year-old is being recognized with an award in her honor.
11-YEAR-OLD Rilee Beisler died in May when she tried saving her two puppies during a house fire at the Sun N Fun RV Resort in Sarasota.
"The Humanitarian award was created by HSSC after we heard about the tragic story with Rilee and her trying to rescue her two puppies in the home, her actions really embodied everything that we stand for here at HSSC and we really wanted to honor her memory," said Senior Director of Operations at HSSC, Rebecca Gustafson.
Children ages 6 to 16 that live in Sarasota County that demonstrate care and compassion for animals can be nominated
"Your kids, or you know somebody in your school that has really demonstrated those values, they are eligible for it," said Gustafson.
"The winner will receive prizes and goodies and we will have an award ceremony at Sun N Fun resort on September 18th,"said Gustafson.
HSSC says it's important to recognize kids like Rilee.
"She really embodies everything that we stand for here at the Humane society of Sarasota County, we not only take care of animals everyday but we reach out into the community to do educate programs so we can really teach kids in our area how to care for animals, compassionate care so we can really get these generations going for the future," said Gustafson.
