Q. I am interested in becoming a volunteer, what is the first step?
A. The first step is to explore our website and volunteer opportunities. If you feel this is the place for you, prospective volunteers need to complete our volunteer application. You can fill this out and submit online by clicking here. It’s just a $30 donation to HSSC for your materials. If you have any questions, please contact Kerry Koppin, at firstname.lastname@example.org or 941.955-4131 x113.
Q. I would like to walk the dogs or work with the cats, how old do you have to be?
A. You must be at least 16 years old to work directly with our animals. If you are at least 12 years old, you can apply to join our Teen Volunteer Club.
Q. What are the different volunteer opportunities?
A. The Humane Society of Sarasota County has several areas of need, please refer to the Volunteer Opportunities tab.
Q. How much time each week do you require volunteers to commit?
A. We are thankful you are interested in helping our shelter animals and understand each person’s availability differs. We ask volunteers to come in at minimum twice a month for at least two hours at a time and stay informed by attending informational/training sessions. Volunteers also check their email frequently as this is our main form of communication with volunteers.
Q. I’m a seasonal resident, can I volunteer?
A. Yes, we have many seasonal volunteers. As long as seasonal volunteers can commit to the minimum of volunteering twice a month for at least two hours at a time, we would love to have their help.
Q. What hours am I able to volunteer?
A. Volunteers are able to volunteer Mondays from 8 AM to 2:30 PM, Tuesdays through Fridays from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM, Saturdays from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM and & Sundays from 8:00 AM to 12:30 PM.
Q. Is there a dress code for volunteers?
A. Yes. Volunteers are given a volunteer t-shirt and name tag at orientation. Volunteers are asked to wear their name badge and volunteer t-shirt at all times. We ask that our volunteers wear comfortable, long pants or longer shorts and closed-toe shoes. Because of the active nature of our shelter pets, we recommend wearing a belt. Flip flops or sandals are not permitted while working at the shelter. Dress code may vary for special events.
Q. Does HSSC offer volunteer opportunities for groups/corporations?
A. HSSC does allow groups/corporations to volunteer and assist with special projects or at special events as needed. To inquire about bringing in your group, please contact Kerry Koppin, at email@example.com or 941.955-4131 x113 or click here to complete the group volunteer request form.
Q. My 10 year old son and I would like to volunteer to work with the animals, can we volunteer together?
A. Unfortunately every volunteer working independently with the animals must be 16 years old.
Q. My daughter needs to complete service hours for high school, can she help at the shelter to complete some of these?
A. Yes, if she is 16 years old or older, please have her click here to complete our online volunteer application. If she is under 16, please refer to our Teen Volunteer Club.
