Volunteer FAQ

Q. I am interested in becoming a volunteer, what is the first step?
A. The first step is to contact Sara Smith, at ssmith@hssc.org or 941.955-4131 x101 and let her know you’re interested.
Q. I would like to walk the dogs or work with the cats, how old do you have to be?
A. You must be at least 18 years old to work directly with our animals. If you are at least 13 years old, you can apply to join our Teen Volunteer Club.
Q. What are the different volunteer opportunities?
A. The Humane Society of Sarasota County has several areas of need, please refer to the Volunteer Opportunities tab.
Q. How much time each week do you require volunteers to commit?
A. We are thankful you are interested in helping our shelter animals and understand each person’s availability differs. We ask volunteers to come in at least twice a month and stay informed through email.
Q. I’m a seasonal resident, can I volunteer?
A. Yes, we have many seasonal volunteers.
Q. What hours am I able to volunteer?
A. Volunteers are able to volunteer Monday 8 AM to 3:30 PM, Tuesday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:30 PM and Saturdays from 8:00 AM to 3:30 PM.
Q. Is there a dress code for volunteers?
A. Volunteers will be given a volunteer t-shirt and name tag at orientation, for a $30 donation. Most jobs require volunteers to wear their volunteer t-shirts, name tags and comfortable pants/jeans or shorts. Flip flops or sandals are not permitted while working at the shelter. Dress code may vary for special events.
Q. Does HSSC offer volunteer opportunities for groups/corporations?
A. HSSC does allow groups/corporations to volunteer and assist with special projects or at special events as needed. To inquire about bringing in your group, please contact Sara Smith, at ssmith@hssc.org or 941.955-4131 x101.
Q. My 10 year old son and I would like to volunteer to work with the animals, can we volunteer together?
A. Unfortunately every volunteer working with the animals must be 18 years old.
Q. My daughter needs to complete service hours for high school, can she help at the shelter to complete some of these?
A. Yes, please refer to our Teen Volunteer Club.
Q. I have court-ordered community service hours to complete, can I complete them with you?
A. Please refer to the Community Service tab for more information.
