The Humane Society of Sarasota County (HSSC) is dedicated to the health and welfare of each animal in our care. Our mission is to save as many animals as possible by securing them loving homes. We are the area’s largest no-kill animal shelter.
Every attempt is made to keep pets with their owners via our successful Feline and K-9 programs that provide behavior counseling and training. If surrender remains the only option, our medical and behavioral teams evaluate every pet taken into the care of HSSC. The shelter accepts all pets deemed adoptable within the capacity constraints of our shelter. Stray animals are referred to Sarasota County Animal Services.
Infrequently, HSSC must make the difficult decision to euthanize animals which have become too sick to be treated or too aggressive or behaviorally challenged to be suitable for adoption. In keeping with our mission, the Humane Society of Sarasota County is committed to a community approach to lowering euthanasia rates in our county. As a result, we work with several open admission shelters and actively rescue at-risk adoptable pets throughout the region.
